cardsfan2222 wrote: Tough start to the season. Are you considering making any changes to the starting lineup? It looks like Burris or Reimold might deserve a chance to get a few starts, especially since so many guys are struggling.
Well Burriss somehow always gets starts because the computer automatically puts him in for some reason. Reimold last year started out going something like 7-14 with 3 homers and ended up hitting around .260 so I'm not really sold on him yet.

Series vs. Cleveland Indians Bullpen Faults in 2 Losses By: J.D. Weeks April 17th, 2011 -- EMERYVILLE, CA -- I feel like I've said this too many times so far and I'll say it way too many times this year. The bullpen once again was responsible for the loss of two games.
Despite a final score of 8-2, game one was a very winnable game. Jordan Walden kept the score at 2-2 when he exited after the fifth inning, only giving up six hits and also striking out six. Chris Ray came in the 7th, and was anything but relieving for Walden. He gave up four runs on three hits and two walks, in not even an inning. Talk about blowing a game. Santiago Casilla then came in and gave up another two runs in the 8th inning, making the bullpen responsible for six runs in two innings. That's absolutely disgraceful. --->Chris Ray I'm not sure, but it already looks depressing for Oakland. Coming in, the bullpen looked like one of the strongest areas on the team, and so far it's been the worst. In addition to the horrible batting, we've now got unbearable bullpen work. The offense was able to get ten hits in the game, but the only production came off a 5th inning Mark Ellis two run homer. The bullpen wasn't as atrocious at game one, but they still are accountable for the loss in game two. Erik Bedard went five solid innings and allowed three runs, K'ing eight. It's good to see Bedard working the K pitches, because when he got it going, the rest of his arsenal starts heating up as well. Rafael Perez came in the game in the 9th inning after the A's tied the game up at 3-3 in the bottom of the 9th, and allowed a run and recorded just an out. Luckily, the A's got a run in the bottom half to keep the going. Extra innings. The 10th inning went by with nothing going on, but the Indians struck in the top of the 11th. With Mark Lowe pitching, Ryan Garko provided an RBI double to score what ended up being the winning run. The middle relievers right now are combined for 0-4, 9.35 ERA. It's embarrassing right now. Kelvim Escobar was significantly better than in his first two outings, and he managed to get a quality start this time. He allowed eight hits and three runs in six innings, once again leaving it to the bullpen. The best three relievers, Perez, Devine, and Ziegler, pitched the 7th, 8th, and 9th innings to seal the deal. It looked much easier for the 'pen this time, and it seemed they were just getting into rhythms and shutting guys down. Jason Giambi homered, Orlando Cabrera drove in two with a double, and Nate McLouth chipped in with an RBI single to provide the offense in the game. A 4-8 start is never a desirable start, but you can't look back at these games. The A's need to move on quickly and look ahead. They can't go into New York and Tampa, then come home against Texas and play like they have been. The intensity and level of play both need to be highly elevated if they don't want to lose Texas already. It's possible, considering they are 4-8 and Texas is 8-5. They could be seven or eight games back by the end of the month, which would put them in a huge hole. Emmanuel Burriss
One thing Bob Geren decided to do after this horrid start was plug in Emmanuel Burriss for some starts, and he responded. He's batting .346 so far in 2011, and has provided valuable presences on the base paths. This is why I agree with Geren's decision to put him in.
"I love Mark (Ellis) as a person and usually as a player, but right now he's off. Nothing seems to be clicking for him. Also, I want to change up our style of play a little bit and start running on the base paths a bit more. In the past I've been about straight baseball, but it's not working in 2011. With DeJesus, McLouth, Cabrera, Sweeney, Burriss, and Goldsmith in the lineup at one time, I think we should rack up four or five steals a game." April 15th, 2011

Series vs. New York Yankees Cahill and Walden Come up Small in Losses By: J.D. Weeks April 21st, 2011 -- New York City, NY -- As much as I've bagged on the bullpen and blamed them for the first twelve games, it turned out to be the lack of quality starting pitching in games two and three with New York. It just seems like the A's can never get everything working at the same time. Game one featured Oakland's best pitcher so far in 2011, Jonathan Sanchez, and he did not disappoint. He held the Bombers to just three hits and two runs over a very strong seven innings. He's surely been the surprise of 2011 and has basically carried the pitching staff so far. It seems like the A's are depending on his success as their success. The bullpen then came in. Rafael Perez let in a run in the 8th, and Brad Ziegler suffered his 3rd blown save already when he allowed a run in the 9th. The game got all the way to the 14th, with the pitching being done by Chris Ray and Santiago Casilla, who pitched for five scoreless relief innings. In the top of the 14th, Emmanuel Burriss came through with an RBI single, and Nate McLouth delivered a two run shot to provide the game-winning runs. The winning pitcher was Casilla. Mike Moustakas also homered in the game, and David DeJesus had a two run double in the 4th. Now is where the starting pitching faults came in. The Bombers couldn't get to Sanchez, but they sure got to Trevor Cahill in game two. The young star got hit for seven runs in just four+ innings, allowing seven hits. The performance was much too heavy for the A's to overcome, and so Cahill was tagged with his second loss already in 2011. One impressive thing in the game was Phillipe Aumont, making his third appearance. He pitched three and a third scoreless innings, and really gave the bullpen a game off. He also gave them the rest in game three in relief.
In game three, it was Jordan Walden starting, but nothing like his first two starts. He allowed ten hits, a high this year for any Oakland starter, and five runs in just four+ innings. Aumont then came in for low-pressure relief work and finished the game, pitching another three and two thirds scoreless, this time a perfect appearance. Frankly there was nothing positive besides the performance of Aumont in games two and three. The hitting was unproductive, going just seventeen for sixty-eight (.250). The A's have already started this tough stretch of games with two bad outings, and two more bad series could be disastrous. April 19th, 2011

Series vs. Tampa Rays A's Split Series in Tampa By: J.D. Weeks April 25th, 2011 -- Tampa, FL -- Things went from bad to mediocre when the A's and I visited Tampa. Personally, I was expecting either a sweep or a 3-1 Tampa series win, but surprisingly the A's got back on track. One of the most ironic things of the weekend was that Mike Moustakas had one hit the entire series. In game one, David DeJesus and Nate McLouth each had three hits, one of McLouth's being a two run homer. Ryan Sweeney went 1-3 with three RBI's on his 5th inning double. Jason Giambi also had a homer and a pair of RBI's.
I certainly wouldn't call Erik Bedard's start a great one, but I'd definitely say it was a typical start of Bedard. He went five innings, allowed seven hits and four runs, struck out nine, and got the win. That's been the story of Bedard's season so far. Decent pitching and a lot of strikeouts have netted him his first win. Right now he sits 3rd in K's in the A.L. and 6th in the bigs. Mark Lowe pitched two solid relief innings, getting it to the 8th, which was pitched by Joey Devine. Devine almost completed the two inning save, but he allowed two hits in the 9th and Bob Geren brought in Brad Ziegler to complete the save opportunity. Hooray! That gives Brad Ziegler more saves than blown saves! Kelvim Escobar had another quality start in game two, once again just meeting the requirements. He went six and allowed three, giving up seven hits and striking out eight. Escobar was in line for the win, handing the ball off to Rafael Perez. Perez got one out in the 7th, not before allowing three runs after walking two and allowing a hit. His ERA now stands at 6.96. Jack Cust had a two run homer, McLouth had an RBI double, and Orlando Cabrera had an RBI triple, providing the offense for the game. Game three was a very good pitching match up between Jonathan Sanchez and James Shields of the Rays. Sanchez went six and gave up three, but it was Shields who stole the spotlight. He went the distance with the shutout, and gave up just four hits and a walk, striking out eight. Shields has been easily the best pitcher in the bigs so far in 2011, sitting at 3-0 with a 0.81 ERA. A slugfest was provided in game four, showing a total of 28 hits and 19 runs. Trevor Cahill was the starter, and once again he was shelled. He got hit for six runs in just three innings, and now his ERA is up there at 10.58. Rumors have been going around that Cahill is off to the minors soon. I don't believe this, because first of all it's been just three weeks into the season. Phillipe Aumont pitched in relief, but didn't have as great of success and last series. He pitched three innings and walked five, something he didn't do as much of in his first appearances. He gave up two runs on four hits, but also ate up some innings. In the 8th inning, the A's got three runs off John Parrish and four off of J.P. Howell in the 9th for the comeback win. Nate McLouth came through with a 4-4 game with a homer and three RBI's. Jack Cust also homered, providing the winning run in the 9th inning off Howell. DeJesus, Moustakas, Giambi, and Cabrera all also had RBI's in the game. To wrap up this April madness of playing some of the best teams in the majors in a row, the A's will host Texas in a three game series. In my opinion, this is a huge series. If the A's sweep, they could tie Texas for 2nd place. If they get swept, it's pretty much a lost season. April 22nd, 2011

Series vs. Texas Rangers Hitting Comes Through Against Texas By: J.D. Weeks April 28th, 2011 -- EMERYVILLE, CA -- To be as brief and straight-forward as possible, the Oakland A's' pitching staff sucks. It may seem a bit harsh, but when you look at the numbers, I think you'll agree with me. The starter in game one was Jordan Walden. He allowed five runs on seven hits in three and two thirds innings, giving the team the kind of start that they're now getting used to. Mark Lowe then came in and gave up four more runs in just two innings. So I bet you're thinking, how the hell did they win? Nate McLouth
Well, Rafael Perez and Joey Devine did a good job holding down the Rangers for the rest of the game, but it was the batting that won the game. David DeJesus, Nate McLouth, Ryan Sweeney and Emmanuel Burriss all had doubles. McLouth, Moustakas, and Sweeney each had triples. Orlando Cabrera had a homer. McLouth, Moustakas, Cabrera, Jason Giambi, Kurt Suzuki, and Burriss all had RBI's. So I guess you could say the offense woke up.
After a four run outburst in the 2nd, the A's were down 9-6 going into the bottom of the 8th. Facing C.J. Wilson of the Rangers, the A's got two runs to cut it to 9-8. Then in the 9th, facing Frank Fransisco, Nate McLouth provided a 2 run double to win the game in dramatic fashion. Game two was a similar game, but this time not going in Oakland's favor. Erik Bedard allowed six runs on seven hits and failed to escape the fifth inning. ERA: 6.03. This time, the deficit was too much to overcome for the A's. Mike Moustakas had another good game, hitting a grand slam in the 7th to spark the comeback, but it was soon silenced. Orlando Cabrera also had an RBI in that inning, but this time C.J. Wilson was able to get out of the inning. Derrick Turnbow shut down the A's in the bottom of the 9th. Kelvim Escobar actually went longer than any of the starters in the series in game three. That's not saying much, though. He went just five innings and allowed five runs on eight hits. This time, the bullpen was pretty good. Rafael Perez and Joey Devine each pitched scoreless appearances. However, Brad Ziegler blew another same, allowing two walks and a hit plus two runs. Mike Moustakas
However, he was able to escape the 9th with a tie game, sending the game into extras. After Chris Ray pitched a perfect top of the 10th, Mike Moustakas came through with an RBI single to end the game, this time the A's winning the battle against Derrick Turnbow.
Moustakas finished 4-6 with a homer and 4 RBI's, ending up with by far the best series of anybody this season. Burriss, Giambi, Clarence Goldsmith, and Nolan Reimold all had doubles, while David DeJesus had a triple. Giambi, Goldsmith, Reimold, and Rajai David all drove in runs to help Moustakas fuel the team. Joey Devine
This was a good test for Oakland to see where they were. However, right now I'd say the pitching is at a D-, only because of the years that Jonathan Sanchez and Joey Devine are having.
One thing to note is that after the game in a press conference with Bob Geren, Geren announced that they would be using Joey Devine in more save situations and Brad Ziegler in more situational roles. Ziegler is 0-1 with a 7.36 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, five saves, and four blown saves. Devine is 1-0 with a 1.17 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, no saves, and no save opportunities yet. April 26th, 2011

Series vs. Kansas City Royals A's Win Game 3 in Crazy Rally By: J.D. Weeks May 1st, 2011 -- EMERYVILLE, CA -- Although the pitching is still performing to the minimum level, the hitting for the A's has come through time and time again so far in 2011. This series win against the Royals can be mostly credited to the batting once again. Orlando Cabrera was the star of game one. He went 3-4 with two runs, a homer, and three RBI's. Mike Moustakas, Nate McLouth, and Mark Ellis also drove in runs in the game. One thing worth noting is that this was Ellis' first start since being benched for Emmanuel Burriss. Jonathan Sanchez was the starter, but wasn't as effective as he's been so far this season. He went five+ innings and allowed five runs, but also struck out ten. In every start so far, whether it's been strikeouts, clutch pitching, or command, Sanchez has had one area of his repertoire shine. Santiago Casilla and Chris Ray each allowed runs in limited relief work, and so Bob Geren called on Brad Ziegler to finish off the game. He was significantly better than he has been so far in 2011, and he was able to pitch a perfect two relief innings. Although he didn't strike anybody out, he kept the Royals off the base paths and was effective in getting his first win of 2011 and lowering his ERA to 5.78. The game was won in the bottom of the 9th after Ziegler pitched the top half. Orlando Cabrera led off with an RBI double. Nate McLouth once again was the hero, singling off Robinson Tejada and once again ending the game in dramatic fashion. Trevor Cahill was the starter in game two. Although he was ineffective and picked up his 3rd loss already in 2011, Cahill was much better and looked more confident on the mound. I think that's the only reason why he's still pitching in the bigs. He has confidence in himself and Bob Geren does as well. He allowed four runs in five innings, walking three and giving up six hits. It didn't help Cahill that Rafael Perez, Chris Ray, Mark Lowe, and Santiago Casilla all allowed a run in relief work, heightening the deficit from two to four when the game was settled. Orlando Cabrera
Offensively, it was a decent game for the A's, who have been red hot at the plate collectively lately. David DeJesus, McLouth, Moustakas, and Emmanuel Burriss all had doubles. McLouth, Moustakas, Cust, and Cabrera all had an RBI in the defeat. Game three was a combination of decent pitching and one hell of a rally. Kyle Davies held the A's to one run in seven and two thirds innings. Jordan Walden was opposing him, and Walden had a better start than his previous three. He allowed three runs, on just three hits, in five innings. With the score being 5-0 going into the bottom of the 9th, the A's had to get going quickly. Orlando Cabrera hit an RBI single to score Moustakas in the 8th off Sean Marshall. In the 9th with Marshall still in, David DeJesus hit an RBI single to score Kurt Suzuki. With men on 1st and 3rd and one out, the Royals brought in Joakim Soria to destroy the rally. McLouth then singled to score Emmanuel Burriss. 1st and 3rd again, 5-3 score. Moustakas then singled to bring in Rajai Davis, who was pinch running for DeJesus, score 5-4. After a single by Jack Cust to load the bases, Orlando Cabrera hit a bases-loaded single to score McLouth and Moustakas and end the game, pouncing on one of the best closers in the game. What an improbable victory! To tag a top set-up man and closer for six hits and five runs in two thirds of an inning. If the A's can do that, they can certainly overcome a four game deficit with 137 games left. April 29th, 2011

Series vs. Los Angeles Angels Starters Turn it Around in Los Angeles By: J.D. Weeks May 3rd -- ANAHEIM, CA -- Erik Bedard and Kelvim Escobar had been two of the biggest disappointments in April. Each had an ERA over 6.00 and performed nowhere near the level of an ace and a number two starter. Erik Bedard
Each of them turned it around heavily in this short, two game series against the division-rival Angels, who currently sit atop the A.L. West. Bedard was first in game one, and he looked like Mr. All-Canada. He shutout the Angels through seven and only allowed three hits. Although he had six walks, he got out of all of his jams and still struck out five. Brad Ziegler pitched another perfect inning, and has been literally perfect since being demoted to the set up role. His ability to pitch in certain situations is a huge lift for both Ziegler, who has had talent-related issues brought up for his entire career, and the A's, who now have three tough pitchers in the back of the bullpen. One of those three is Joey Devine, who wasn't very tough in his first save situation of the year. Devine allowed a two RBI double to Brandon Wood after allowing a hit and walking one. So that makes Devine 0/1, and the team 5/10. I really don't think that this is going to go on for that much longer. Devine is too talented, but I think it's unusual for him to get switched to closing so suddenly. He's been successful in spot-closing before, and I think he'll be tough soon. Chris Ray pitched the 10th but allowed a walkoff RBI single to Wilson Betemit. So Ray ended up giving up three hits and a run in just a third of an inning. The lack of middle relieving success this year has been huge in a number of losses so far. Jason Giambi's two run homer in the 3rd was the only production in the game. Not a single player on the A's had a multi-hit game. Kelvim Escobar
Game two was a case of one good pitcher dominating from the start of the game. This was the case for Escobar, who'd been absolutely awful, against his former team. He basically gave the bullpen a day off, pitching eight innings and allowing just three hits. His nine K's were just a reflection on how well he pitched. In the two games, Bedard and Escobar together held the Angels to six hits. Remarkable. Brad Ziegler once again pitched a scoreless inning, though he allowed two hits. The offense was a lot more productive than game one. Ryan Sweeney, Mike Moustakas, Giambi, and Jack Cust all homered. Orlando Cabrera and Mark Ellis also drove in runs. The attack was very balanced, seeing all but three of the starters get hits. Another two game series against Texas is next in Texas, with the number three and four starters going.

Series vs. Texas Rangers A's Split Again in Texas, Suzuki Injured By: J.D. Weeks May 5th, 2011 -- ARLINGTON, TX -- Another short two game series was split by the A's and a division rival, this time it being the Texas Rangers. And once again, a pitcher had an unbelievable start to single-handedly win the game. Jonathan Sanchez
In game one, Jonathan Sanchez showed why he deserved that fat new three year contract in the off-season. Sanchez was virtually unhittable and almost flawless. He pitched the complete game shutout, holding one of the best offense in the league in Texas to three hits and no runs. He walked just two, and K'd twelve, and now holds the title of most K's in the entire league. He also ranks ninth in ERA, sixth in innings, and fourth in WHIP. Sanchez early on has to be considered as an early favorite for breakout player of the year. Although the offense was not needed against Texas, Mike Moustakas and Nate McLouth each came through with homers, Moustakas' being a three run and McLouth's being a two run jack. Game two was a different story. Once again it was Trevor Cahill at the start of a blowout. Although Cahill only allowed three runs, he only pitched five innings and gave up six hits. The loss makes him 0-4 and his ERA is at 9.00. After the game, Bob Geren told reporters, "Yeah he may not have been terrible tonight, but he's been terrible this season and you can't deny that. I don't know what's going on. He looked good in Spring and he's developed immensely since 2009. I don't know what it is. He may need some more minor league work. To make things worse, Brett Anderson, the prospect they decided to trade instead of Cahill, is 3-1 with a 1.21 ERA and 37 K's for the Pirates. The 7th inning of game two was really the ending of the game. Rafael Perez allowed two in the 6th, and then proceeded to allow two more in the 7th. In relief, Santiago Casilla allowed another four in just two thirds of an inning. Perez's ERA: 7.26. Casilla's ERA: 6.89. I really don't know what's going on. The bullpen was great last year. Cliff Pennington
One note that was Kurt Suzuki was injured in game one, suffering an inflamed hip while catching. He'll be forced to miss two to three weeks with the injury and has been placed on the fifteen day disabled list. With an open roster spot, the A's elected to bring up Cliff Pennington from AAA, where he was hitting .422. Goldsmith will now start everyday at catcher, and Cust will get all the DH'ing.
Well, the A's go into Kansas City for a three game series and hopefully should be able to at least get two of three. I'm expecting a sweep with Bedard and Escobar going, but you never know with this team.
