You should get Jon Lester and John Grabow to fill your respective lacking positions.

Series vs. Los Angeles Dodgers
Sanchez Homers, Leads Way in Series Win
By: J.D. Weeks

June 19th, 2011 -- EMERYVILLE, CA -- The A's are 14-3 in the month of June. That means that they started 25-27, and have made a huge turnaround in the ball club. I can honestly say that the A's are looking like the best team in all of baseball right now.

That was until Kelvim Escobar got pegged and broke his leg, and Rafael Perez suffered a torn hamstring. These are two monumental losses and will each show their effects quite harshly if the A's don't come together as a team and perform without them.
Clarence Goldsmith
Game one of the Cubs series was started by Escobar. He was actually very good before the injury, only allowing four hits and a pair of runs in six. The next pitcher was then Rafael Perez. I guess you can say this is quite ironic. Perez pitched two scoreless innings and struck out three. Joey Devine then pitched a scoreless ninth for save number ten.

The offense was mainly provided by Clarence Goldsmith. Goldsmith drove in a run with a single in the second, giving the A's a 1-0 lead. Orlando Cabrera brought in a run off Chad Billingsley in the top of the sixth, tying the game at 2-2. In the top of the ninth, Goldsmith homered off Eric Stults to put the A's up 3-2, and that run ended up being the game-winning run for the A's.

Game two was also a nail-biter. First off, let me start by saying that Jonathan Sanchez homered in this game. Yes, the former N.L. pitcher who weighs 165 pounds homered off a fellow lefty in Clayton Kershaw. In the most improbable fashion, a pitcher homered off another pitcher.
          Jonathan Sanchez
Sanchez was also brilliant on the mound, pitching into the seventh and allowing one run on four hits. Sanchez got it back after a tough outing his last time out. He's going to have to step up even more than he has so far while Escobar is out.

The bullpen was pretty good, well except for Joey Devine. Perez pitched one and two thirds scoreless, leaving it to Joey Devine in the bottom of the ninth. Devine walked three batters and allowed a hit and the tying run, pushing the game into extras. For Devine, it's his third blown save and the team's 14th. However, Chris Ray pitched two scoreless extra-innings to get the A's to the twelfth.

In the top of the twelfth, Nolan Reimold doubled off J.J. Putz to score Nate McLouth after he reached on error. Brad Ziegler then pitched the bottom half of the inning for the scoreless save, his seventh. It seems like the unassigned closer is always the one to be perfect.

Dana Eveland was certainly not near-perfect in game three. Eveland was disastrous, allowing six runs in four+ innings, taking his first loss. Although the bullpen (Aumont, Lowe, Perez, Ray) came together to get through the game without any more harm done, Nolan Reimold's two run homer, his RBI single, and Orlando Cabrera's RBI double weren't enough to stage the comeback.

The A's passed yet another test, beating one of the N.L.'s finest in Los Angeles. They'll now travel to San Diego for a lesser team in the Padres. They currently rank last in the entire MLB with a 21-50 record, and could possibly be one of the seller teams whom the A's buy from. The matchups look like this:

Game One: Jordan Walden (5-2, 4.52 ERA) vs. Kevin Correia (1-0, 3.12 ERA)
Game Two: Erik Bedard (4-5, 4.68 ERA) vs. Claudio Vargas (2-5, 2.91 ERA)
Game Three: Mike Antonini (3-0, 1.29 ERA) vs. Homer Bailey (2-2, 4.89 ERA)

Series vs. San Diego Padres
Starting Pitching Leads Way
By: J.D. Weeks

June 23rd, 2011 -- SAN DIEGO, CA -- Oakland had a very legitimate chance of sweeping the pathetic Padres. However, aside from the starting pitching, I think the A's took a step backward as a team.

Jordan Walden was on the hill in game one. He was rather effective, pitching seven innings and allowing three runs on six hits. Walden has been very impressive, and aside from one bad start, he very easily could be 6-1 with a sub-4.00 ERA. He's been about as effective as most number three starters as a number five himself.
        Joey Devine
After Walden was pulled, we saw a very comforting one-two punch in Brad Ziegler and Joey Devine. Seeing these two go eighth and ninth successfully was very important, because it will be that way in most close games. They each had scoreless innings, while Ziegler got a hold and Devine got a save.

Jason Giambi's grand salami in the fifth accounted for a large part of the run production. He also doubled and scored another time, finishing 3-4 with four RBI's. David DeJesus and Mike Moustakas each had RBI singles in the sixth to put the A's up 6-1 in the sixth. It was all gravy from there, with Ziegler and Devine pitching.

Erik Bedard was next to face this pathetic San Diego lineup, which has a team batting average of .267, in game two. Bedard held them to two runs in six innings, and he K's eight. This game was big because Bedard is finally at .500, now 5-5 on the season.

The bullpen was again very good. Chris Ray pitched the seventh, and was virtually perfect. Aside from a lead off walk, Ray avoided all potential trouble and got out of the inning quickly. Brad Ziegler pitched a perfect eighth for another hold, and handed it to Devine. He walked one but also struck out one, and was able to shut the door fairly easily, and picked up save number twelve.

Emmanuel Burriss drove in three with a double in the sixth off Claudio Vargas, and provided the mass of the offensive load. The other run came on a Clarence Goldsmith RBI single in the first.
       Mike Antonini
Probably the most interesting story of this series, Mike Antonini made his first major league start in game three. He was very impressive, and allowed just two runs on three hits in six innings.

However, the bullpen was back to its bad habits after Antonini exited the game. Chris Ray allowed three runs on a pair of hits an a walk, giving up the tying run and forcing the game into extras. After Mark Lowe pitched two scoreless to drive the game into extras, Brad Ziegler was the pitcher. He allowed a quick two hits and a run, giving the Padres the W and putting the fact that Rafael Perez is gone right into the face of Bob Geren.

I do think that this reliever situation must be fixed, because Brad Ziegler and Joey Devine can't pitch every night. Chris Ray and Mark Lowe have proven nothing so far as to have Bob Geren rely on them. Tyler Johnson has yet to pitch, and Phillipe Aumont has only been used in certain situations.

A couple names to throw out there are Jeff Bennett from the O's, J.P. Howell from the Rays, Brandon League from the Jays, Jose Arredondo from the White Sox, Jared Burton from the Indians, Pat Neshek from the Twins, Juan Cruz from the Mariners, Fernando Rodney from the Braves, Scot Shields from the Cubs, Bill Bray from the Reds, Bob Howry from the Cardinals, Hong-Chih Kuo from the Diamondbacks, Taylor Buchholz from the Rockies, and Rafael Soriano from the Giants.

Series vs. Colorado Rockies
Cust Homers Four Times in Sweep
By: J.D. Weeks

June 26th, 2011 -- EMERYVILLE, CA -- Another sweep gives the A's an even healthier first place lead and puts them in a good position to face the next four opponents in the Mariners, Red Sox, Mariners again, and Angels. The pitching has been very solid and the batting has come through. It's all coming together for Bob Geren.

Aside from a first inning meltdown in game one, Jonathan Sanchez was excellent. After the first, in which he allowed three hits and three runs, Sanchez pitched one-hit ball for five innings, and struck out six batters. Even when Sanchez has been "off" his game, he's been able to compensate and walk away with wins. So far, he's got seven and ranks seventh in the A.L. in strikeouts with 97.

Brad Ziegler had two nice relief innings after Sanchez exited. Zieg was able to shut the Rockies out for long enough to get the ball to Phillippe Aumont, who uncharacteristically pitched the ninth inning. Nevertheless, he finished out the game with relative ease.

On the offensive side of things, Jack Cust lead the way with his fourth inning three run homer off starter Aaron Cook. The A's got the rest of their production on two RBI doubles followed by an RBI single by Clarence Goldsmith, Nolan Reimold, and Emmanuel Burriss, respectively.
             Mike Moustakas
Dana Eveland was the starter in game two. Eveland held his own in his six innings, and held the Rockies to three runs on nine hits. Chris Ray pitched a solid relief inning in the seventh, followed by another scoreless inning by Ziegler in the eighth. However, handing the ball to the most reliable reliever all year in Devine, the A's got in trouble quickly. In the top of the ninth, Devine allowed a walk and a hit, then proceeding to allow the game-tying RBI single.

However, the A's would come back. You know that. In the bottom of the inning off reliever Clay Buchholz, Mike Moustakas launched a three run, game-ending homer that sent the A's to yet another victory and the win of game two.

In game three, Jordan Walden was the starter, and the young flame-thrower was pretty good. He only pitched five innings and allowed three runs, but he limited damage when he needed to and pitched with the support of the offense. Walden has been consistently pitching five or six innings, and consistently getting wins.
           Jack Cust
Tyler Johnson made his first relief appearance since being called up. His two relief innings were good warm up innings for 2011, despite allowing a run. Johnson could be the reliever to replace Santiago Casilla, who is now in AAA. Ziegler pitched yet another scoreless inning, pushing his ERA back to half at 4.50. Joey Devine allowed another run in the ninth, but this time held onto the lead and got the save.

Jack Cust led the way in this one with his two home run game. Nate McLouth also homered and drove in two. The other two runs were supplied by an Emmanuel Burriss double and an RBI single from Kurt Suzuki.

The sweep is great, but now the A's will play the Mariners, Red Sox, Mariners, and Angels before the All-Star Break. If they can escape 7-6 or so, they'll be in good shape heading into the second half of the season.

Good luck with Tyler Johnson. I have him on my team. He was pretty good last season, taking some of the left handed relief pressure off of Reyes, but now as the lead left handed reliever, he as been less than great for me this season. He has a really nice slider that breaks a ton. I can't remember if you play any of your games or if they are all sim.

By the way, shouldn't it be Ynoa, not Inoa, and shouldn't he be only 18 in 2011 and not 20?

Kudos!

I sim all of them because I'd still be in like 2009 if i played all of them and did the long reports.

I know it's Ynoa...originally people thought it was Inoa and on most pages it's Inoa. That's his common name. And yeah he should be 18....but in the Show the youngest you can be is 18....so in 2009 he was 18 and now he's 20. I'm gonna go back and change it soon.

Series vs. Seattle Mariners
A's Lose Twice in Close Series
By: J.D. Weeks

June 29th, 2011 -- EMERYVILLE, CA -- The A's didn't have as much success against Seattle as they have had previously in June. However, the two losses were decided by one run and could've easily turned into an Oakland sweep.

Game one was more winnable than game three. The starter was Erik Bedard, who wasn't particularly great in this one. Erik allowed four runs in five innings and only struck out one. Chris Ray and Tyler Johnson combined for three scoreless relief innings, to get the ball to the ninth.

It was Joey Devine again to come on for the save. Devine again was beaten up, and he allowed two runs on two hits to give up the lead. The blown save is number five for Devine against just thirteen saves.

After the game, Bob Geren talked about Devine. "I have confidence in Joey. He's done relief work for a long time and I think it's just a matter of getting adjusted to the new role. Obviously it's taken him a bit long to adjust, but he's our guy. Joey Devine is the closer."

Mike Moustakas continued production in his MVP-like season, hitting another two run homer in the fourth to tie the game at that point at 4-4. Ryan Sweeney chipped in with a two RBI double in the third, while Orlando Cabrera provided the other run with an RBI double in the eighth to originally give the A's a 5-4 lead before it was given right back by Devine.
    Mike Antonini
Mike Antonini was the starter in game two, and certainly made his case to be the starter and remain a starter. Filling in for an injured Kelvim Escobar, Antonini pitched six+ scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and improving to 4-0 with a 1.32 ERA. Antonini never has had over-powering stuff, but his command and poise on the mound allow him to work through innings quickly. He reminds me of a Cliff Lee or a Cole Hamels at this point.

Tyler Johnson allowed a run in one+ innings of relief, but it was certainly nothing to worry about. Johnson has done pretty well so far and holds a 4.15 ERA. After Johnson it was Brad Ziegler to pitch a scoreless ninth. It makes you wonder if Bob Geren will go back to Ziegler, especially because of how well Brad is pitching. His ERA has dropped significantly from the 5.00's to the low 4.00's. Right now he's building a scoreless innings streak.
                Nate McLouth - 2011 All-Star?
Moustakas homered again, this time a solo in the fifth. Nate McLouth also homered, driving in three with his fourth inning bomb. Emmanuel Burriss provided the other two runs with an RBI double in the fourth and an RBI single in the fifth.

Jonathan Sanchez never really got on track in game three. He allowed four runs in four+ innings, despite allowing eight hits and a walk. Nevertheless, Phillippe Aumont was brilliant in relief, and ended up finishing out the game and allowing just three hits.

Sanchez's start never really gave Oakland a chance to get into the game, and so the offense was limited. Nate McLouth homered again, along with Orlando Cabrera. Both were solo shots and really didn't do much for the A's. David DeJesus' RBI double was the only other means of production in game three.

A series loss is something you don't like to see and something you haven't seen in a while from the A's, but I definitely wouldn't be worried. Two of the games were lost by one run, and could've gone either way. As Bob Geren said, Joey Devine is still elevating from a setup role to the closer role, which is a big jump.

Series vs. Boston Red Sox
Offense Huge in Wins
By: J.D. Weeks

July 3rd, 2011 -- EMERYVILLE, CA -- The A's went from one of the worst batting nights you could possibly think of to a total of 36 hits in their next two games. They took care of business with the Red Sox and are slowly being recognized as a tier-one team in the A.L.
Josh Beckett of the Red Sox
Game one was absolutely pathetic. Yes, Josh Beckett is an extremely good pitcher and a very good ace, but there is no way the A's should get less than five hits on him. Beckett, with his complete game shutout, held the A's to two hits over the nine innings and struck out seven batters. David DeJesus and Orlando Cabrera compiled the two hits in the game. In the next two games, they ended up compiling 18x more hits.

The pitching really didn't matter much because the A's weren't going to win this game anyway. Dana Eveland allowed three runs in just four+ innings and exited early due to a high pitch count. Eveland had control problems, falling behind many hitters and walking four.

Phillippe Aumont was good in relief, and held the Sox scoreless into the ninth inning. Chris Ray then pitched the ninth inning scoreless. Ray has being superb since coming back from AAA and hasn't allowed a run since.

Game two was a great effort by the A's. Jordan Walden wasn't too great though. He allowed four runs in four innings. Walden has progressively been getting worse and worse as the season goes on, and now has an ERA of 4.70.

However, the bullpen pitched pretty well as a unit and got the ball to extras with only two more runs scoring. Mark Lowe pitched one and two thirds innings while Chris Ray pitched three innings of three hit ball. In extras, Brad Ziegler pitched a scoreless tenth and allowed just a walk, allowing the A's to strike in the bottom half.
          Mike Moustakas
Another Mike Moustakas walkoff was eminent, this time it was a two run homer off Manny Delcarmen. Clarence Goldsmith and Jack Cust homered, solo and two run, respectively. Nate McLouth, Orlando Cabrera, Ryan Sweeney, and Jason Giambi all also drove in a run in the win.

This game was particularly impressive because the A's had 20 hits as a team, by far the most all season by Oakland. DeJesus, McLouth, Moustakas, Cabrera, Giambi, and Burriss all had multi-hit games.

Game three was simply a blowout from the third inning on. The A's got to Brad Penny, scoring five runs off him in four innings. They then proceeded to destroy the bullpen, scoring eight runs in four innings off the bullpen.

Erik Bedard had a bounce back start and was great in this one. He allowed just one run in seven innings. Brad Ziegler continued his scoreless streak with two relief innings to close out the game.
     Jason Giambi
Jason Giambi had a huge game. He racked up three hits, a pair of homers, five RBI's, three runs, and a walk. Moustakas and Cabrera also homered and brought in two each. DeJesus, McLouth, and Sweeney also had an RBI in the huge win.

The A's wrap up the first half of the season with two series against divisional opponents. Next is Seattle, and the A's will travel to Safeco Park for the three game series. The matchups look like this:

Game One: Mike Antonini (4-0, 1.33 ERA) vs. Sean Gallagher (3-8, 6.98 ERA)
Game Two: Jonathan Sanchez (7-3, 3.04 ERA) vs. Ramon A. Ramirez (4-1, 5.18 ERA)
Game Three: Dana Eveland (3-2, 3.09 ERA) vs. Barry Rolls (5-3, 4.04 ERA)

Series vs. Seattle Mariners
Offense Scores Four Runs in Series
By: J.D. Weeks

July 6th, 2011 -- SEATTLE, WA --  The offense of the A's was limited to say the least. The Mariners pitching, composed of one former Athletic, seemed unhittable by the A's.

Mike Antonini made yet another huge start in game one of this Seattle series. Mike went seven shutout innings and allowed just seven hits and a walk. Although he only struck out one, nonetheless his start was impressive, getting out of situations with ground balls and timely pitching.

The more and more I see of Antonini I see, the more and more I like. He is starting to remind me of J.A. Happ from the Philadelphia Phillies. His stuff is certainly not superb, but his makeup is tremendous and he knows how to pitch. That might be the most under-looked thing in scouting. When scouters look at prospect, they look at velocity, movement, and physical makeup. One thing their forgetting is that a guy has to know how to pitch and be able to pitch out of situations to be successful. A guy like Antonini is a prime example of that.

However, just because Mike had a tremendous start doesn't mean that he would get his fifth win. The offense was simply not there, and Tyler Johnson was in relief for Antonini. In the bottom of the ninth, Johnson allowed a walkoff single to Yuniesky Betancourt.

The A's were opposed and shut down by former Oakland A's pitcher Sean Gallagher, who was traded by the A's in a minor deal involving mostly minor leaguers, including Greg Halman. Gallagher pitched eight shutout innings and held the A's to three hits, two of them being doubles by Orlando Cabrera and Nolan Reimold.

In game two, an error by Emmanuel Burriss that would've ended the first inning led to a three run outburst on Jonathan Sanchez. He finished the game by allowing just one more run, over a full five innings. It wasn't a bad start from Sanchez, but either way you look at it, four runs scored while he was pitching.

Tyler Johnson pitched a nice relief inning, bouncing back from allowing the walkoff hit in game one. Brad Ziegler pitched the seventh and eighth, though he allowed a two run homer in the bottom of the eighth.
   Ryan Sweeney
The offense was once again limited, giving Jonathan Sanchez his fourth loss. An Emmanuel Burriss rare solo homer was the only offense provided for Sanchez, and besides that, a Ryan Sweeney doubled was the only other extra base hit.

Dana Eveland had another good start in game three. He allowed two runs in six+ innings of work, and did his part to hand it over to the bullpen. Tyler Johnson pitched another scoreless inning, Chris Ray two thirds of an inning scoreless, and Joey Devine an inning scoreless for the save.

The A's had no trouble in this one getting extra base hits. Burriss, Cabrera, Moustakas, Goldsmith, and Sweeney all doubled, with Moustakas' being an RBI double and Sweeney's being a two RBI double.

The A's will face the Angels, another division rival, in a four game series to officially end the first half of the season. The starting matchups look like this:

Game One: Jordan Walden (7-2, 4.71 ERA) vs. David Austen (2-4, 6.81 ERA)
Game Two: Erik Bedard (6-5, 4.45 ERA) vs. Ervin Santana (6-8, 3.26 ERA)
Game Three: Mike Antonini (4-0, 1.13 ERA) vs. Jered Weaver (3-9, 3.97 ERA)
Game Four: Jonathan Sanchez (7-4, 2.98 ERA) vs. Anthony Ortega (5-3, 4.61 ERA)
